How Legal Lift's AI actually works

"AI writing your legal documents" sounds risky. Here's exactly why it isn't — and precisely what the AI is, and isn't, allowed to touch.

Every Legal Lift document is built on what we call a safe architecture: the legal substance is fixed and never written by AI, and the AI's only job is turning your own words into clear, professional wording. Here's how that actually works, piece by piece.

The three parts of every document

Every template on Legal Lift is built from three separate parts, and only one of them ever touches AI:

Fixed
The legal clauses — drafted with real UK legal citations (e.g. specific Acts of Parliament), reviewed, and identical for every customer who uses that template. The AI never sees these as something it's allowed to change.
AI
A small set of named "slots" — specific details you type in, like a job description or the reason you're leaving a role. The AI's only task is rephrasing what you wrote into clearer, more professional wording.
Fixed
Conditional logic — which clause appears based on your answers (for example, whether a notice clause reflects 6 months' service or 3 years'). This is ordinary code, not AI, so the outcome is always predictable and consistent.

Put simply: the AI is never asked "write me an employment contract." It's asked "here's a fixed employment contract template and a sentence the user wrote about their new hire's duties — rephrase that sentence professionally." Those are very different, and very differently risky, tasks.

A concrete example

Here's the kind of thing that actually happens when you generate a document. This is an illustrative example to show the pattern, not a real customer's document.

The surrounding contract clauses — governing law, notice periods, termination rights, statutory references — don't change at all based on this input. Only the specific sentence you provided gets tidied up.

Why this matters: hallucination risk

AI language models have a well-documented failure mode called hallucination — generating text that sounds confident and plausible but is factually wrong, including inventing legal citations or clauses that don't exist. This is the single biggest reason "just let AI write your legal document" is a risky idea.

The safe architecture removes this risk at the source. Because the AI is never asked to draft legal clauses — only to rephrase input you already provided — it has no opportunity to invent a citation, misstate the law, or produce an unenforceable clause. The legal structure comes from the fixed template every time.

Every generated document is shown to you before download, in full. Can the AI make legal mistakes in my document?

The AI is never asked to write or invent legal clauses, so it can't introduce a made-up citation or an incorrect legal structure — every clause comes from a fixed template drafted with real UK legislation. Its only job is rephrasing the details you provide, and you can review and edit that wording before downloading.

What if I don't like how the AI rephrased my answer?

Every generated document is fully editable before you download it — go back with "Edit answers," or edit the text directly in the preview.

Is my data used to train the AI?

Your document content is sent to the AI provider solely to generate your document and is not used to train their models. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Why not just let the AI write the whole document?

Letting an AI freely draft legal clauses risks hallucination — plausible-sounding but legally wrong wording. Keeping the legal structure fixed and using AI only for rephrasing your own input removes that risk entirely.
